First Cookie Enforcements in France

France’s data Protection Authority, the CNIL, has taken its first steps enforcing the cookie law in France, ordering 20 websites them to make amendments within a specified timeframe, or face further action.

The CNIL, France’s data protection authority has written to 20 website owners about failures to comply with the French cookie law, according to a press release published on June 30th. It is the first action taken by the regulator following initial investigations at the end of 2014.

Back in March we learnt that the CNIL had been given new powers to carry out online data protection compliance inspections, and we speculated that this might extend to checking for cookie consent. It has now emerged that this is exactly what they plan to do.

The French Data Protection Authority the CNIL has recently issued guidance and FAQs for website operators on how to comply with the French implementation of the cookie law, which requires an opt-in model for consent.
